West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners
A Mountain State of Running
In the BOD meeting at SMS (7/27/19), ee discussed the idea of CPR and First Aid Training and the idea of
offering it to all race directors, volunteers, and potentially all club members. Dan Lehmann agreed
to research and come back to the board with possible recommended action.
There are 6 WV Public Service Training facilities across WV. One of their many duties is EMT certification and First Responder training etc. I reached out to the Clarksburg for info on CRPR, First Aid, AED classes. A fellow named Mike was very helpful. They hold classes in all 6 regions about 6 times a year. He suggested the ECSI, Emergency Care & Safety Institute, course would meet our goals. The cost is $15 a person. He said if we had a group they could do a special class for us, but as the conversation progressed he understood we were all over WV and just signing up for the class in the closest location would make most sense; Clarksburg, Charleston Beckley, Martinsburg, Parkersburg, Wheeling.
He offered to get calendars for the next year for each location and let me know. What do you think?
Sounds like a good plan. Easy and accesible.
My vision was to find someone to come-up to SMS in July and provide some hands-on training. I wonder if there is someone within our club or social circle that we could hire to do a training at SMS at our Annual Meeting? Would it be improper to pose an open-ended question of the sort on our club Facebook page?
I don't think folks will give of their time to attend a course unless we bring the training to them.
Also, do we need the volunteers to be "certified" or would simply be giving some hands-on "unofficial" training by a health professional (ie. John Logar, Jody Lehmann, etc) in CPR and First-Aid be sufficient? My thought is that any training is better than none.
The American Red Cross even has online certifications https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/classes/adult-first-aid%2Fcpr%2Faed-online-only/05452326.html?cgid=first-aid&isCourse=true&storedistance=undefined#cgid=cpr&zip=elkins%2C%2Bwv&latitude=38.92593970000001&longitude=-79.8467349&zipcode=26241&searchtype=class&start=5
Just fodder for further discussion . . .
I believe that this is a great idea to pursue. How we do it isn't as important as simply offering the training to improve our response to emergencies.
I'm willing to look into that idea. Not promising any results on finding an instructor. It would need to be a dedicated block of time without disturbance.
Experience Learning may have some insight here.
I am happy to help. I know there are local Red Cross certified instructors. Maybe we can convince ($$) someone to come up to Spruce Knob.
Most of the online courses for cpr/1st aid seem to be about $35.
What if we offered reimbursement in exchange for commitment to volunteer at a race.
I think this would be a good cost/value program for the club.
I also think hands on training at the annual meeting would be beneficial.
I think anything we do to promote CPR/First Aid training for our volunteers is a good idea.
What does the group think about Lehmann and I researching options more and reporting back -- maybe at the same time as our satellite messenger device proposal -- with some further ideas and options?
