Conditions were icy; perfect for snowshoe racing because you really couldn't race by any other means.
Lara Lehmann provided a live demonstration of just how icy it was out there.
And of just how impossible it would have been to race in skate shoes today.
But she did make it to the food table eventually.
SNOWshoes, people, SNOWshoes.
Adam is the only serious one here.
Just in time for the start, as if on cue, the rain started up. Joel said that it wouldn't be a race in WV if it weren't raining at some point during the race.
But, we lined up anyhow and Mr. Chase described the course in great detail. Start out going over there ...
Then eventually you'll end up over this way.
And later, you'll be over that way.
It's as simple as that.
And they're off! Like a herd of turtles, it felt like after being used to racing in shoes and running on pavement.
Adam took the early lead. ... and the late lead, as we found out later.
But he shared the lead at several points in between.
Sorry, I don't know this fellow's name.
There we go, heading out on Gandalf's trail straight into the depths of NIMH ... I'm getting my fairytales mixed up here.
That's all but a few of the racers there.
Finishing the Snow Farm loop, Eli watches the big bunch of crazies come up upon him.
Still tightly packed here about a quarter mile into the race.
And hamming for the camera.
Now it's time to get down to business though, now is when the hills start.
We're all hunkered down, ready for those hills.
Chip filmed a lot. I'm not sure what happened with it all, but the event was well documented.
The chase pack is in place!
Up on the mountain, Adam had firmly secured his lead as he came flying around a bend towards the top of the climbing section.
This fellow was just as solidly in second place. None of the rest of us were flying quite as much as Adam.
But we all had a good time, none the less.
Unfortunately, the field had spread out enough by this time that our intrepid photographer had to head back down to the finish to catch the action down there.
Action indeed! Adam's looking back to see how hard he's gonna have to kick.
Those darn ultra runners will never learn, will they, how bad of a habit looking back is?
But now he knows he's got it.
Who? me?
No No No, it was that other guy, I swear!
THAT guy!
Sophia sees her father.
And does a little dance.
Sid was right on my tail by the end.
waahhooo
See.
He blends in well with the landscape, eh?
Eli now spots his father,
and does his little dance.
CARL!! DADDD!!
Now Carl's the one doing the flying.
The finish line is somewhere in there. No one was quite sure exactly where.
High 10.
Yoiks.
Dan played race timer and babysitter roles today.
Reunited at last, after 3.1 long miles!
The red spruce were brilliant despite the dreary weather.
