Non-sequitur to keep the BoD updated on things that happen yearly. I renewed our general liability insurance with RRCA. It was $1616.35, slightly more than last year. I also submitted the WV Secretary of State Annual Report that informs WV that we are a volunteer association that is still 'in business'.

@emilyjhuguenin I agree with the collective that this is a great direction for a Fun Run. While I like to annoucne that “it doesnt have to be fun to be fun” it can also, sometimes, just be fun — like, Type 1 fun — and that’s OK!

I have piloted a concept in Glendale Park that was relatively well received that might translate well to this event but basically a Parkrun (google it; popular British concept). Basically a no-entry fee, no expectations, no timing/results 5K event run in a simplle, easy to get to location. I set up mile markers around the paved Glendale loop (buckets turned upside down with the miles written on pieces of paper taped to the buckets). Participants were encouraged to come and run as far or as short as they wanted, running, walking, anything was acceptable.

things that work about this:

1. new, and/or less-secure runners are familiar with the 5K distance, it feels accomplishable, not too scary but still challenging.

2. The event design leaves space for no one to feel judged if they dont complete the distance. also leaves space for folks who want to go farther than 3.1M

3. loop design allows for copious amount of encouragement between participants

4. glendale location includes great options for non-running, kid-friendly entertainment that would even allow a single parent to continue to observe a child’s play while participating in the event.

5. Repeating the event on a regular schedule could be a great community building project.

We did it on a chilly day in December a couple years ago with pretty good participation from Ascenders and some local runners. A summer date would probably be more fun.

@kaernigmail-com Thanks for the insights! I went to that event you did so I have sort of been picturing this idea at Glendale/Riverbend parks. Since they are in the EAST system I may see if EAST would want to get involved to help this fun run too.

Thanks all for your validation!

@emilyjhuguenin for what its worth, I’m on the EAST board and we’ve been talking about trying to mobilize some more community engagement activities around town. We are also planning an annual meeting for the early summer. I can’t remember the date right now.

Totally spaced that you were at that event too!
