West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners
A Mountain State of Running
We have our well established $200 "mini-grant" process established for club sponsored fun runs/events. Are there any such requests for discussion?
Dan and I would like to request such a grant for the Highland Work/Trainer Weekend. The high volume is hard on the Young's septic tank and we plan to get one port-a-john and use some money for food after the work day on Saturday. The date is 5/2-3.
Here's another, I'd like to host "A Mid Summer Night's Run" on the newly established Meeks Mountain Trails in Hurricane. We'll start around dusk for a 5-6 mile run with early outs for shorter distance. Follow it with pizza, drinks, a camp fire and smores. There's a shelter to rent at the trail head and a big fire circle, and a play ground or any night owl kids. Targeting a Friday night in late July or early August and this would replace the Splash n Dash this year. I'm expecting to be within the $200 budget. I hope this will get a better draw of people since it's on a Friday, starts later, and will preview the new trails that many WVMTR members have been supporting. I have a grant request related to these same trails.
I did not do the Fox Forest Run last year due to some date conflicts personally, but I would like to request another mini-grant to re-start it with a new twist. Historically, we have done a night run around Halloween in costumes. It has been great fun, but I think the nighttime aspect has deterred many that might be interested and we've essentially only gotten existing club members out. I am thinking of doing a run in Fox Forest in April/May. I will market it as a "free 5K", but it will be an untimed (but marked course) fun run with the key focus of outreach. I would like to introduce more local folks to the trails of Fox Forest (which WVMTR is credited for maintaining) and to trail running and I think this would be an ideal way to do so.
I received some correspondence from club member Tom Mauger who would like to start a club sponsored fun run at Valley Falls (remember Mark Flood use to have a race there long ago) outside Fairmont. He's only in the initial phase and does not have dates or a proposal ready. I will most like email the board for consideration once he gives me the full information.
I move to approve mini grant funding for Highland Sky Work Week, A Midsummer Nights Run and Fox Forest Run.
For the HS40 trail work and trainer weekend we can rent 1 portojon and provide food/refreshments within the usual $200 limit.
A WVMTR return to Valley Falls would be excellent! Send Tom our Race Criteria document.
I've been in email correspondence with Tom for the last few weeks. I don't believe he has any intention of starting an actual WVMTR race, simply a fun run similar to Slash'n'Dash, Fox Forest, etc.
Super nice guy. He's an ophthalmologist at WVU.
I second the motion to approve mini grant funding for Highland Sky Work Week, A Midsummer Nights Run and Fox Forest Run.
I will work on an easier way to establish club events on the website. The current process is similar to races, and is too time consuming given the variability in yearly events. Also will establish a WVMTR Club Events calendar for people to subscribe.
Motion and second to approve the three club sponsored events. Any discussion?
It all looks like a wonderful start to 2020 for our club and the events we host!
